Is Rio romantic? Absolutely.
Is it family-friendly? Surprisingly, yes.
Here’s how to tailor your Rio holiday.
Rio for Couples
Few cities compete with Rio for romance.
Watch sunrise at Christ the Redeemer, then sip cocktails overlooking Ipanema.
Book:
-
Private sunset sailboat tours - there are alot of these to choose from, but we did this one with open bar and it was well worth it. Highly recommended!
-
Couples spa packages
-
Boutique romantic hotels
Santa Teresa’s hillside mansions are perfect for honeymoon vibes.
Rio for Families
Stay in Barra da Tijuca for space and calmer beaches.
Family-friendly ideas:
-
Cable car to Sugarloaf Mountain - a special day for everyone, our kids still talk about this special place 6 years after going.
-
Botanical Garden visits
-
Beach sports - who doesn't love a day on the beach and taking a dip in the sea to cool down.
-
Guided rainforest walks - we havent done these yet as our youngest was to young last time we were in Rio, but people in our hotel did the tours and loved every second of them.
Kid-friendly tours are widely available.
Practical Tips
-
Avoid isolated areas at night - a tip for all locations not just Rio!
-
Use registered taxis or ride apps - unfortunately there are fake taxis around so be careful. Many of the airport transfer companies also will take you on day trips and drive you around various locations for a set price. Reach out to any of these and you will be safe with them.
-
We're keeping you safe, but planning on swimming in the sea, well keep the reefs safe too and bring reef-safe sunscreen and swim shoes (these ones are true to size so highly recommended)
-
Hydrate constantly
Rio suits adventurous couples, active families, and even multi generational trips.
